How To Communicate With Older Adults
When my grandfather was alive, it was often difficult to carry on a conversation with him. He couldn’t hear very well, but would never admit it and refused to wear any hearing aids. So in most conversations, he was yelling, and no matter how much you yelled, he would still yell at you to speak up. We all loved my grandfather very much, although there were times you tried to have short conversations with him because of his hearing.
This infographic on Tips for Communicating with Older Adults (provided by www.liftcaregiving.com) provides a lot of useful information I wish I had years ago for talking with my grandfather. For example, it mentions that shouting may actually make it more difficult for them to hear you, that instead you should slow down and make sure you enunciate each word correctly. Advice that I wish I could go back & try out.
